The Indian government has implemented stringent emission norms, known as Bharat Stage VI (BS6), to control the pollution level in the country. The BS6 emission norms have been divided into two phases, where the first phase was implemented on April 1, 2020, and the second phase is scheduled to be implemented on April 1, 2023.
Phase two of the BS6 norms is known as the Real Driving Emission (RDE) norms, which will require all vehicles to achieve emission targets in real-world conditions. The RDE test will provide a more realistic estimation of the number of emissions likely to be produced by vehicles in real traffic conditions with frequent changes in speed, acceleration, and deceleration, as opposed to more steady conditions in lab tests. The RDE test will be in addition to the existing lab test that is currently carried out for all vehicles.

To comply with these new standards, auto manufacturers will have to upgrade the engines which will involve huge costs and may not be economically viable for every model on sale today. The cost of upgrading engines and other components may lead to a price hike for vehicles, making it difficult for customers to buy new cars. As a result, many of the low-selling cars currently on sale may not be available for sale from April 1 onwards.
The RDE norms will have a significant impact on the auto industry. The new regulations will force automakers to focus on the development of cleaner and greener vehicles, which will be beneficial for the environment. However, it will also result in a decline in the production of certain car models, which may not be able to comply with the new standards.
