Three compact hybrid SUVs in a row with hybrid badges

Compact hybrid SUVs are the next big thing in the Indian market, but our Short overstated how close they are. Five brands are linked to small hybrid SUVs, and when we checked, only one of them, the Maruti Fronx, has a hybrid that has actually been seen testing. None of the five is on sale, none has an announced price, and several of the “hybrids” are rumours. This guide sorts the compact hybrid SUVs into what is reported, what is committed and what is rumour, and points to the one hybrid that is genuinely arriving this week, which is not a compact at all.

Compact hybrid SUVs at a glance

  • Maruti Fronx hybrid: spied, reported for 2027, not launched.
  • Toyota Taisor hybrid: rumour only.
  • Next-generation Kia Sonet: hybrid reported for later, around 2028 or 2029, not at launch.
  • Renault Bridger: India debut confirmed by end-2027, hybrid not confirmed.
  • Honda sub-4-metre SUV: confirmed from 2028, hybrid unconfirmed.
  • On sale today: none of these. The proven strong hybrids are all midsize.

Maruti Fronx hybrid

This is the one with real evidence. Rushlane reported an unbadged Fronx with a “Hybrid” badge testing in Gurgaon in January 2025. Sources disagree on the type. Carlelo describes a series hybrid in which the 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine acts mainly as a generator for a small battery of about 1.5 to 2 kWh, while Rushlane calls it a “series-parallel strong hybrid”. Timing has slipped: Carlelo says the hybrid has been pushed to 2027 because of packaging problems. Mileage is pure speculation, with estimates from 20 to 25 km/l at the low end to 35 to 40 km/l at the high end. Our Short’s “over 35 km/l” is therefore a rumour, since nothing has been tested or homologated. For comparison, the current Fronx is rated at about 21.79 km/l for the manual and 22.89 km/l for the automatic.

Toyota Taisor hybrid

The Taisor is a rebadged Fronx that launched in April 2024 with petrol power only. We found a single headline from Carlelo saying that an early-2027 Taisor facelift could get a hybrid engine, with no spy pictures and nothing from Toyota. If Maruti’s hybrid does arrive, it is plausible that Toyota would get it too, but that is our inference, not a report. Treat the Taisor hybrid as a rumour.

Next-generation Kia Sonet

The next Sonet has been spied and is expected in 2027. Rushlane’s report, citing Autocar India, says a strong hybrid is likely later, around 2028 or 2029, and not at launch. Our Short said the 2027 Sonet was “confirmed to be exploring” a hybrid. Kia has not confirmed it officially, and the timing in the Short is wrong.

Renault Bridger and Honda’s sub-4-metre SUV

Renault confirmed that the production version of its Bridger concept will debut in India by the end of 2027, built in Chennai with “multiple energy options” and an electric version a few months later, per Autocar Professional. Whether a full hybrid will be offered is not confirmed. Honda said in May 2026 that India-specific sub-4-metre and midsize SUVs start arriving in 2028, and Rushlane says they “could potentially” have hybrid options, which is speculation. No price is available for either.

Car Status Hybrid Timing
Maruti Fronx Spied Reported 2027, reported
Toyota Taisor Rumour Not found beyond one headline Early 2027 facelift, rumoured
Kia Sonet (next-gen) Spied Reported for later Launch 2027, hybrid 2028 to 2029
Renault Bridger Concept, debut confirmed Not confirmed By end-2027
Honda sub-4m SUV Committed Rumour From 2028

What you can actually buy: the proven hybrids are midsize

Today’s strong hybrids are bigger and pricier than the cars in the Short. According to Autocar India, the Maruti Victoris is a midsize SUV of 4,360 mm, priced from ₹10.50 lakh to ₹19.99 lakh, with a strong-hybrid e-CVT rated at 28.65 km/l. The Grand Vitara strong hybrid is rated at 27.97 km/l. The Brezza, which the Short put in its title, was facelifted in July 2026 from about ₹7.40 lakh with a 1.5-litre mild hybrid, a new 1.0-litre turbo and a CNG version, and no hybrid Brezza has been reported. So a compact strong hybrid would be a cheaper, smaller and different system, and none is priced.

The hybrid that is arriving this week

The Renault Duster Strong Hybrid is the real hybrid news. Bookings opened on 9 October at ₹21,000, with the launch and price reveal on 17 October, and Renault claims 29 km/l and 160 PS. It is a midsize SUV and not a compact, and we explain it in our Duster Hybrid guide.

A note on our Short

Our Short said five brands are “officially preparing” strong hybrids for sub-4-metre SUVs, and its title said the Brezza is “dead”. Neither holds up. Honda and Renault have committed to new SUVs, but not to hybrids, and nothing is official for the Fronx, Taisor or Sonet hybrids. The Brezza is alive, newly facelifted and has no hybrid rival on sale. The Short’s “over 35 km/l” for the Fronx is a rumour, and the Taisor hybrid is not backed by any credible source. It was right that small hybrids are coming, but the dates are 2027 and later.

Should you wait for a compact hybrid?

Wait if you are not buying before 2027 and want a small SUV with very high mileage, because a Fronx hybrid is the most likely first arrival. Buy now if you need a car this year: the Brezza and the Fronx are both on sale, and a pricing and mileage claim two years away is not a reason to delay. We have not tested any of these vehicles. This page is based on published reports and we will update it as more are confirmed. For more, see upcoming cars, watch the Short in our Shorts feed, and read car news.
