Camouflaged five-door Mahindra Thar Electric test mule

The Mahindra Thar Electric is, for now, a camouflaged five-door test mule that was photographed on public roads in early October 2026, and almost everything about it is inference from spy pictures. Our Short called it the “ultimate electric off-roader” and said it was officially on the road. It is neither: Mahindra has confirmed no name, battery, range, price or launch date. What the pictures do show is a boxy five-door body with a design that looks inspired by the Vision T concept. Here is what has been reported about the Mahindra Thar Electric, what has not been found, and how it relates to the Thar Roxx you can buy today.

Mahindra Thar Electric at a glance

  • What was spotted: a heavily camouflaged five-door test mule, reported as the first time it has been seen testing on the road.
  • Design: boxy and upright, with a flat roof and a design that resembles the Vision T concept.
  • Powertrain: expected to be fully electric. This is an expectation, not a confirmation.
  • Battery, range, price: not announced and not found in any report.
  • Launch: no date from Mahindra. Reports point to 2028 or later.

What the spy pictures show

According to Rushlane’s report of 4 October, the mule has five doors, a flat roof and upright pillars, with a two-level grille made of vertical elements, squarish headlamp housings that are likely LEDs, a flat clamshell bonnet and flared wheel arches. The side steps are flat, unlike the exposed steps on the Thar.e concept. Motoroids reached similar conclusions a day later. The tail lamps look like temporary test units, so do not read the rear design as final.

Wheels and tyres

The wheels “appear to be around 19 or 20 inches”, according to Rushlane, and the exact size has not been established. The tyres look more road-biased than the off-road rubber on the concepts. That is a reminder that a test mule often runs whatever wheels the engineers have to hand, so the production car could look different.

Rear suspension and spare wheel

Rushlane says the underbody views suggest independent rear suspension, which would be a notable departure from the current Thar’s rear axle. Motoroids says the mule “appears to have” it. Both are visual inference rather than confirmation. There is no externally mounted spare wheel on the mule, unlike both the Thar.e and Vision T concepts, but Rushlane says a production version may still carry a tailgate spare like the Roxx. Early images are also described as conflicting on this, so treat the missing spare as an open question.

What we can see of the interior

Very little. The only details visible are a lit digital instrument display and large grab handles near the A-pillars, and the dashboard is hidden. Some talk online says the Thar Electric will borrow the large portrait touchscreen from the Scorpio. The reports we read do not state that as fact: they say the Vision T concept had a portrait touchscreen, and that sharing the Scorpio Lifestyler’s screen is “a possibility”. No touchscreen was seen on the mule, and the size and hardware are unconfirmed.

Platform: what is expected and what is confirmed

Mahindra has not confirmed a platform for this vehicle. Motoroids says the SUV is “expected to use” the NU_IQ platform, which can support petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric versions in front-wheel and all-wheel drive. Mahindra unveiled the Vision T concept on 15 August 2025 on NU_IQ, and Evo India reported that Mahindra said some of the concepts could reach production by 2027. Mahindra has not said which concepts will be built, and the Thar.e concept from 2023 used a customised INGLO platform. Some reports link the car to the battery technology of the BE 6 and XEV 9e, but that is unconfirmed.

What it means for the Thar Roxx

Nothing, for now. The Thar Roxx is on sale and is not being replaced. A Rushlane roundup of 13 October notes that a Roxx with DaVinci dampers is still being tested, so the electric model is a future, separate vehicle. We covered the Roxx’s latest upgrades in our Thar Roxx update story.

A note on our Short

Our Short’s title said the Thar Roxx is “dead”. That was clickbait: the Roxx is on sale and still in development. The Short also said the electric off-roader is “officially hitting the roads”. Only a test mule has been seen, and Mahindra has said nothing official about the name or the vehicle. The description called a Scorpio-style portrait touchscreen a strong rumour, but the sources say only that it is possible. It also said the car would directly rival the Jetour T2 and the iCAR V23. Those were mentioned in the same report, but the Jetour T2 is a JSW plug-in hybrid and not an electric car, so “direct rival” is our framing, not a sourced fact. The 2028 timing is a reported estimate and Mahindra has not confirmed it.

Should you wait for the Thar Electric?

Wait only if you were not planning to buy before 2028 and you specifically want an electric off-roader from Mahindra. A date that is two years away, with no price or range, is not a basis for delaying a purchase.

Buy what is on sale if you need a Thar now, since the Thar range is on sale today. We have not driven or tested any of these vehicles, and this page is based on published spy-shot reports. We will update it when Mahindra confirms something. For more, see spy shots, watch the Short in our Shorts feed, and read about electric cars.
