Baleno vs Altroz is the choice for anyone with about ₹8 lakh to spend on a premium hatchback in 2026, and the answer depends on whether you value fuel economy or crash-test results more. The Maruti Baleno was facelifted in September 2026 with a new three-cylinder engine, and the Tata Altroz is the one with a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating. This page is the written companion to our video. It lines up both cars’ prices, engines, safety and features, shows which variants sit near ₹8 lakh, and notes where our video’s pairings are not like-for-like.

Watch the full video above for our variant picks in Hinglish. Below is the checked, written version.

The Alpha adds a 360-degree camera, a head-up display, cruise control and ventilated front seats, and only the Alpha(O) gets Level 2 ADAS. The CNG automatic is listed by CarDekho only, so confirm it with a dealer.
Altroz prices and what you get
Prices below are from CarDekho and ZigWheels for October 2026. Tata raised prices by up to ₹25,000 from 1 September, so confirm the current figure.
| Altroz variant | Price (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|
| Smart | 6.00 |
| Pure / Pure S | 7.15 / 7.45 |
| Pure AMT / Pure S AMT | 7.72 / 8.02 |
| Creative / Creative S | 8.10 / 8.45 |
| Creative AMT / Creative S AMT | 8.67 / 9.02 |
| Accomplished S | 9.30 |
| Creative S DCA | 9.65 |
| Accomplished S DCA / Accomplished Plus S DCA | 10.50 / 10.75 |
The Creative trim adds a 10.25-inch screen, a 360-degree camera, push-button start, rear AC vents, ambient lighting, a cooled glovebox and a rear wiper. The Creative S adds a sunroof, and the Accomplished S adds 16-inch alloys, a wireless charger and eight speakers. The Altroz CNG starts around ₹7.30 lakh and the diesel around ₹8.30 lakh, and the diesel is manual only.
Baleno vs Altroz around ₹8 lakh: Zeta or Creative?
The two cars meet near ₹8 lakh. The Baleno Zeta manual costs ₹8.00 lakh and the Altroz Creative manual costs ₹8.10 lakh. Autocar India and V3Cars both pick the Zeta as the Baleno’s best buy, and the Altroz Creative is the main step up in its range with the 360-degree camera and the bigger screen. The Altroz Pure S automatic at ₹8.02 lakh is the cheapest Altroz automatic with a sunroof, but it lacks the 360-degree camera. As for which is better, the sources do not say. It is our editorial call: pick the Zeta for efficiency and lower running cost, and the Creative for the safety rating and the feature list.
Baleno vs Altroz safety: the clearest difference
The Altroz scored 5 stars in Bharat NCAP, with 29.65 out of 32 for adult protection and 44.90 out of 49 for child protection, as CarDekho’s comparison shows. The Baleno scored 4 stars for adults (26.52 out of 32) and 3 stars for children (34.81 out of 49), but that test was in June 2025 on the pre-facelift car, so the facelift’s result may differ. Both cars have six airbags as standard.
Mileage, CNG and boot space
The Baleno’s claimed figures are 23.80 km/l for the petrol manual, 24.77 km/l for the AMT, and 33.61 km/kg for CNG, though Autocar India’s spec page shows 34.47 km/kg, so sources conflict. A V3Cars long-term test saw about 18.1 km/l in the real world. We could not find ARAI figures for the Altroz facelift, and older figures were around 19 km/l for petrol, 26 to 28 km/kg for CNG and 23.64 km/l for diesel. On CNG practicality, the Altroz’s twin-cylinder layout has a boot of about 210 litres against the Baleno’s 318 litres, and CarDekho says the Baleno’s CNG boot is still tight, so check both with the cylinders fitted.
Offers this month
We found no October benefits on the Baleno facelift. CarDekho lists October benefits of about ₹55,000 to ₹75,000 on the Altroz, without a variant breakdown, so treat that as “up to ₹75,000” and dealer-dependent. Our guide to Maruti Nexa discounts has the rest of Nexa’s offers.
A note on our video
Our video’s pairings are by name, and they are not like-for-like in price. The Altroz Creative at ₹8.10 lakh matches the Baleno Zeta at ₹8.00 lakh, while the Accomplished S at ₹9.30 lakh sits near the Baleno Alpha at ₹9.10 lakh. The Altroz DCA starts at the Creative S DCA at ₹9.65 lakh, which is about ₹1.15 lakh more than the Baleno Zeta AMT. The claim that the Altroz is the more practical CNG car is weak, since its boot is smaller, and the Baleno’s crash rating predates the facelift. The video did not say that both cars carry six airbags. Our “city-friendly” Baleno remark is a view and not a sourced claim.
Baleno vs Altroz: which should you buy?
Buy the Baleno Zeta if you want better claimed mileage, a CNG option with a large mileage figure and a lower price. Buy the Altroz Creative if you value the 5-star rating, the 360-degree camera and diesel as an option. We have not driven either car, and this page uses published specifications. Watch the full video for our reasoning, and see the videos page and comparisons.
